Books I’m Planning to Read in 2022

A couple people have asked me, so I decided to write a post and share my TBR (To Be Read) list for 2022. This is just a plan. Like any plan, it will fall apart to some extent during execution. But you have to start somewhere.

I should note that there are a few 2022 books that I’ve already read, which is why they aren’t on my list.

AZURA GHOST, by Essa Hansen
DEEP DIVE, by Ron Walters
UNDER FORTUNATE STARS, by Ren Hutchings

All three of them are great, and I highly recommend them, though Hansen’s is a sequel, and you’d have to read NOPHEK GLOSS first, which I also recommend. Like seriously, you could stop reading this post and go read that book instead and I wouldn’t be mad.

Onto the list, not necessarily in order. It depends on when I get them and in what format (some will be audio, which depends a lot on how much yardwork I do.)

First, the SFF books:

BRAKING DAY by Adam Oyebanji (Already started)

CHAOS VECTOR by Megan O’Keefe (Already started on audio)

CATALYST GATE by Megan O’Keefe (I’m listening to these on audio, back to back, to finish the series without forgetting what happened. I meant to do this in 2021 and just didn’t get to it.)

BLUEBIRD by Ciel Pierlot

RISE OF THE MAGES by Scott Drakeford

THE CIRCUS INFINITE by Khan Wong

THE BLOOD TRIALS by N.E. Davenport

WAKE OF WAR by Zac Topping

GOLIATH by Tochi Onyebuchi

STARS AND BONES by Gareth Powell

PRIEST OF CROWNS by Peter McLean.

Non SFF books:

LIKE A SISTER by Kellye Garrett

RAZORBLADE TEARS by SA Cosby

And a couple of older books that I should have read before now but haven’t:

A CANTICLE FOR LEBOWITZ by Walter M. Miller

THE THREE BODY PROBLEM by Cixin Liu

And that’s it right now. I’ve only got fifteen books on my list. That’s my plan, and yes, I know it’s ridiculous. Being honest, I’ll probably actually get to twelve or thirteen of them. Things always come up. Given that I will probably read between 30 and 40 books this year, there’s a lot of room to add more, and I will, but I know better than to try to plan it out with any kind of fidelity. You live, you learn.

For example, I’ll probably add some of the books that get nominated for the Nebulas and Hugos, since I’m a voter for both, and I’ll likely do the same with the novella categories. So that’s maybe six or eight additional (I won’t read them all, but most)

I’ll definitely add in some fantasy, which is notably lacking from this list. I think Rebecca Roanhorse’s sequel is coming out, and I really liked BLACK SUN, so I’ll probably get that.

I’ll get some offers to read books early from authors, agents, and publishers. And I’ll do some of that.

I have friends who will have books come out, and I’ll read some of those.

And I’ll see something go on sale for $1.99 and buy it, or it will be on sale on audible for $5 and I’ll buy it there. I am a sucker for a sale.

And my friends or a trusted review site will point out three or four books that I have to read because they read them and loved them, though some of that will probably overlap.

Lastly, there are no indie books on this list, and that will definitely change. That’s no shade intended toward indies. It’s just that in a lot of cases, those books aren’t announced as early and if they are, I’m just not as attenuated to those circles, so I don’t always hear about them. But they will come to my attention, and I’ll definitely read some indie SF. They tend to be more of an impulse read for me than something I plan. I’ll see it, I’ll want it, I’ll get it.

And on top of this, there probably something I plan to read that I’ve forgotten. Maybe there’s a sequel to something I really want that comes out late in the year and I’m not tracking it yet. Maybe I’ve even told somebody that I’d read their book and then not put it on here. Wouldn’t be the first time. Yes, it’s embarrassing. But I’m still going to read it. I’m just disorganized. I’m quite sure they haven’t sent it to me yet…I’d remember that. Probably.

And that’s it. What books are you looking forward to reading in 2022? Feel free to drop a recommendation in the comments. Maybe I’ll add it to my list.
